Our Idol

Padmabhushan Tarabai Modak and Padmashri Anutai Wagh chose the picturesque tribal area of Kosbad as a place to put their ideas of pre-primary and primary education into practice in 1956. Here they envisioned and implemented many innovations and new ideas about the child education.

Tarabai Modak was born in 19 April 1892. She worked as Principal of women’s college in Rajkot. In 1945 she started Gram Bal Shiksha Kendra at Bordi, where Anutai Wagh worked as a teacher. Tarabai & Anutai wrote many books on child education for teachers, parents & children. The Vikaswadi project was launched and conducted at Kosbad by their constant efforts, where many innovative educational experiments took place.

Vikaswadi Adhyapak Vidyalay was started in 1957 to fulfill the shortage of primary teachers those who can work in tribal, rural areas and understand tribal children & their needs very well.

Tarabai Modak was awarded ‘Padmabhushan’ in 1962 and Anutai Wagh was awarded ‘Padmashree’ in 1985 for their extraordinary work for education in tribal area. Tarabai & Anutai followed the principle of “BAL DEVO BHAV” (Consider children as god & worship them) throught their life.
